Hertford College door

Welcome to the Economics website at Hertford College, Oxford, which is under development as a resource for our students. Others are welcome to browse, especially those who are thinking of applying for Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE), Economics and Management (E&M), History and Economics (H&E) or Engineering, Economics and Management (EEM), who might wish to find out something more about how Economics is taught at Hertford. Hertford College is located in the heart of Oxford, directly opposite the Bodleian Library. We maintain very high academic standards in a friendly environment. One of the oldest parts of the College is the main door (embossed with floral detail), which dates from the seventeenth century (shown at the left).

I am Dimitra Petropoulou, Lecturer and Director of Studies in Economics at Hertford. My main research interests are in International Trade, particularly in Trade Intermediation, Political Economy, Trade Policy, and more recently, in the economics of resource-rich countries. To first year PPE, E&M and H&E students I teach Introductory Economics (also taught to EEM students as a Finals course); to the second years I teach Microeconomics and Quantitative Economics (core courses), as well as International Economics and Economics of OECD Countries (option courses). I also tutor Hertford Visiting Students and OPUS students, primarily in the areas of International Economics, Game Theory and Environmental Economics.

  Dimitra Petropoulou

Hertford College has always employed two members of staff to teach in Economics (either one Fellow and one Stipendiary Lecturer or two Fellows). A new Fellow will be appointed to start in the academic year 2011-12. For the academic year 2010-11 a second Stipendiary Lecturer will be appointed to tutor the second years in Macroeconomics (core course) and to assist with the Revisions for Finalists.

Our graduates go on to have illustrious careers in a wide number of fields, some of them as professional economists. One prominent Economist and Hertford graduate is Marian Bell, who was a member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee from June 2002 to June 2005 and continues to consult on policy issues.
